Rona Fowler was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is a graduate of C.E. Byrd High School. She also attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and has traveled worldwide. After experiencing personal tragedies, she moved to Destin, Florida, living there 16 years until her son died in Tallahassee in a cave diving accident. Rona treasures the beach and always credits God and the long walks with the sun and water and good friends for healing her and allowing her to work through her grief at age 61 by means of her visual art. Moving back to Shreveport to be near her mother, she was able to gain custody of her granddaughter, who has always been one of her greatest inspirations.
Reviews of the work of this self taught artist are always positive, such as by JoAnne Harris in her Shreveport Times column Art Scene.
“Her painting techniques leave nothing to be desired. She has explored several distinct areas of creativity…and is not limited to any one medium. Her favorite palettes include watercolor, acrylic, and gouache, which she sometimes mixes even with paper collages. Her work easily falls in the naïve category, with its stylized simplistic forms, lack of perspective and palette of light and bright colors. The major subjects, angels and biblical figures, lead these works into the realm of visionary realism. Miraculous elements abound, always respectfully treated with a certain degree of objective realism plus an equal degree of other worldly atmosphere. Fowler’s art is best described as being somewhere between visionary and objective realism, although she has also produced several abstract pieces in mixed media. Her stylized perspective has become her own personal style.”
Although she began this wonderful creative outlet late in life, because of the fulfillment she has received, Rona desires to encourage others, no matter what age, to do the same. Her greatest joy is to bring joy to others. So whether through personal contact or the bond you find in her paintings, your life will be textured uniquely by the art of Rona Fowler.
She is bringing her art home to Destin, where it all started.
